Tokaji Aszú, the fruit of the world’s most expensive winemaking process

Markus Del Monego MW & Sommelier World Champion 1998 (16:00 – 16:45 Monday, 11th March)

Tokaji Aszú is for those who want something really special. It does not fit into any of the known patterns and its consumption goes beyond the usual premium wine experience, thanks to its aromatic complexity, rich, velvety texture and elegant acidity, which is not found in other wines. This is a wine whose production can never be taken for granted, as it depends on a unique combination of climatic conditions. Markus Del Monego is the world’s first Master of Wine and Sommelier World Champion. The German wine expert invites you to an amazing masterclass, where six Tokaji Aszús will be poured, showing the differences between styles and vintages.

Markus Del Monego: Born in Switzerland in 1966, Markus Del Monego grew up in South Baden, Germany. He has worked as a sommelier in Germany and in the hotel business in UK. In 1998 he became the first German World Sommelier Champion. In 2003 he passed the Master of Wine exam, becoming the first person to hold both titles. In 2014 he became a Sake Samurai, in 2015 Ambassador of Barolo wines and in 2016 Ambassador of Champagne. Today he is the owner and managing director of tasteTainment GmbH, a consultancy based in Essen, Germany, which advises wine merchants, wine producers and private individuals around the world on all aspects of “wine and enjoyment”.
